Chapter 14

Frederick, Maryland

September 11, 1862

THE BIG bay trotted up the pike towards Frederick as Carleton pulled out some of the jerky and chewed on it, letting the peppery flavor calm his hunger. He was relieved and excited that he finally was starting part two of his mission. With the Special Order hidden from the Union troops, he could get on with the business of saving Jackson.

It was getting dark, but enough moonlight filtered through the trees to make his way. Some Confederates were still in town, but most of the troops were headed to Hagerstown and Harpers Ferry. The town was quiet. He guided the horse around Frederick and looked for the road south. He wasn’t quite sure where it was in 1862. In modern time, it was route 15. He had driven it several times, but that wouldn’t help him tonight. He would be looking for something more like a dirt cart trail than a road. He trotted the bay patiently until a lamp swinging along the road revealed a man walking into town.

“Whoa,” and Brownie stopped. “Sir, where’s the road heading to Point of Rocks?”

“You ain’t plannin on goin’ over that mountain tonight, are ya? It’s real dark, and that road is rough as a cob. You’d best stay in Frederick tonight and tackle the mountain road in the mornin’.”

“I’d sure like to do that, but I have an urgent message to take to Leesburg. And I’m running late.”

“Well, if you’re bent on a tough trip, the turnoff is about a hundred yards ahead on your left, kind of a Y. It’s the only thing that looks like a road. Not much more than a trail. If you go straight, you’ll hit Jefferson. There might even be a sign pointin’ towards Leesburg or Jefferson, I cain’t recall which. Good luck to ya. You’ll need it. Remember to keep to your left when you get to the Y.”

“Thank you kindly, sir.” Carleton continued on and soon came to the Y in the road, with a small sign pointing ahead to Jefferson. He stayed left heading into the mountains. He had no intention of tackling the crossing at night and he looked for a place to bed down. About a half a mile later, he turned off the trail into the woods, which were sparse but provided enough cover to mask any eyes from the trail. He rode until he found an open glade bordering the creek, stopped, unsaddled and watered the bay, then rubbed her down with the old shirt. After he tethered the horse, he looked for a place to rest and found some thick grass where he could be comfortable. Using the clothes as covers and the saddle for a pillow, he settled in for a few hours sleep.
